SSHC is Open! We are located at 15 John Street in Leamington (the old CAS building).
The creation of a local centre for addictions has been a dream for me since I came to the Leamington area in 1997. Like many of you; there have been many real life experiences associated with addictions in my lifetime.
As a nurse working full time since 1969 I have seen the impact of addiction on the body and souls of people.
Can you believe pregnant women in hospital were given beer to help them breastfeed? Can you believe nurses used to hand out “Big Reds” to every patient in hospital to help them sleep?
Did you know 1 in 6 high school students meet the criteria for Substance Abuse? And that the area we live in has a higher prevalence rate than all of Ontario?
Knowledge about addiction has come a long way. What has not come long way is treatment and access to it. There is evidence that this is changing
The LHIN (our local health care funder) strategic plan for addictions makes commitments. A brief summary of those commitments follows:
1) More community based treatment options for clients and their families
2) 72 hour limit for the longest time a person has to wait for getting an assessment and help
3) Equity in the distribution of resource – shift resources to the rural areas
The Vision of those at the addiction planning committee is stated as: “The ESC region has an integrated continuum of person centered care and accountable services for individuals with addictions and their families living in supportive communities that are respectful, helpful and inclusive “
The SSHC board would express our wish for the Leamington area in plainer language.
Our Vision: A rural centre of excellence for people experiencing addiction.
Our Mission: An addictions centre committed to the development of an informed, inclusive and safe community.
The is no lead organization in the Leamington area with an addictions mandate. SSHC was born to fill that gap. The services are is Kingsville, Wheatly and Leamington
